Christopher Isherwood war erst einundzwanzig, als er mit seinem ersten Roman „All the Conspirators“ begann. In seiner Einleitung zur amerikanischen Ausgabe erklärt Isherwood: „All the Conspirators dokumentiert ein kleineres Engagement in dem, was Shelley den ‚großen Krieg zwischen Alt und Jung‘ nennt. Und was für ein Krieg das war!“ In vielerlei Hinsicht ist dieser Roman (wie die klassischen Berliner Geschichten) ein historisches Stück, das aus einer bestimmten historischen Situation hervorgeht – Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Eltern und Kindern mit all ihren leidenschaftlichen moralischen Kämpfen. Isherwoods lebendige Darstellung einer älteren Generation, die versucht, sich festzuhalten, während eine jüngere Generation versucht, sich zu befreien, wirkt immer noch nachhallend und entwaffnend.
