The novel In the Registry is a key work by Ante Kovačić and the most important novel of Croatian realism. In this work, Kovačić addresses the problem of the transition from the peasant class to the gentry class.

The novel was published in 1888. The author tells the story of the poor Ivica Kičmanović who comes to the city from a village in Zagorje to study. Over thirty years, it covers Ivica's childhood, youth and early adulthood, leading up to his tragic end - suicide in a burning registry office. The work is a unique blend of realism and fantasy, naturalism and romance.

It was originally published in serials in the magazine Vijenac and was only published as a book in 1911. This classic of Croatian literature paints a shocking picture of our society at the end of the 19th century. The novel was also adapted into a cult television series of the same name.
