Princeza de Klev
The Princesse de Cleves by Madame de La Fayette is a masterpiece of French literature and the first modern psychological novel to dissect passion and duty at court.
The novel The Princesse de Cleves, published anonymously in 1678, is a monumental work of French literature that is rightly considered the forerunner of the modern psychological novel. The plot is set in the luxurious but intrigue-filled atmosphere of the French court of King Henry II. The central heroine is the young, exceptionally beautiful and moral Mademoiselle de Chartres, who becomes a princess by marrying the Prince de Cleves. Although her husband truly loves her, she remains in the marriage guided by a sense of duty and honor, until she meets the enchanting and passionate Duke de Nemours at court.
What sets this work apart in the history of literature is its revolutionary emphasis on the interior monologue and psychological analysis of the characters rather than on mere external action. The princess struggles with a devastating internal struggle between unexpected love passion and strict moral principles and the marriage vow, ultimately making a radical and unexpected decision that shocks the court. Madame de La Fayette masterfully depicts the hypocrisy of court life, the ruthlessness of passion, and the cost of maintaining personal integrity, creating a timeless classic that continues to captivate readers today with its profound psychological insight and refined style.
