Pokajnik

Janko Matko

A true story about a young Croatian emigrant.

Franjo, a handsome young man from the village, contrary to customs, proposed to the girl Tereza, but her parents rejected him because the village thought that his mother was a witch. After another failed attempt, the embarrassed Franjo goes to America, where he starts working hard at a mine and a brick factory. In the brickyard, he meets Mary, the owner's daughter, who breaks off her engagement so she can marry Franja. In love and happy, Mary persuades Franjo to visit his birthplace to meet his family. Franjo reluctantly agrees because he was ashamed of his roots. Offended by her son's behavior, the mother curses him that he will not die until he comes to Croatia and repents in order to wash away the insult and humiliation he caused the family...
