"Colas Breugnon" is a charming romance of life in Burgundy three hundred years ago. It is an "autobiographical" novel, the story being told in the first person by Colas, who reviews his fifty years of life, and describes all its joys and sorrows.
In this work, written during World War I, Rolland contrasts the destructive hatred with the joy of life, humor, and solidarity. Kola is a kind of Burgundian Falstaff or Rabelais' Gargantua – rough but noble, earthly but deeply humane.
Aristotel noted that "art imitates life" but it turned out that "life imitates art" can also be the other way around, as in the case of the novel The First, Second, Third Man by Mirjana Đurđević.
In Duchesse de Guermantes, the protagonist and his family move to a new apartment, part of the de Guermantes palace in Paris. He admires members of high society and finally meets the Duchesse de Guermantes and his interest in her becomes akin to love.
