Omerta

Omerta

Mario Puzo

This novel is the last work written by Mario Puzo before his death, and it is also, along with The Godfather and The Last Don, the final part of his mafia trilogy.

Astorre Viola is a young and successful businessman, he imports macaroni, he likes to ride horses and on the way he does his hobby - singing Sicilian ballads. But as the adopted nephew of retired mafia boss Don Aprile, he is the destined manager of the banking empire - the legal source of money for Don Aprile's children, honorable and honest members of society.

Astorre's peaceful life will be turned upside down in an instant. Don Aprile's rivals will hatch a treacherous plot and break omerta - the law of silence. As a man of honor, Astorre will be tasked with avenging his benefactor and protecting his children from dirty business, corrupt FBI agents, and old mob ties.

Written in Puzo's well-known casual style, Omerta abounds in a series of details that show his knowledge of the inner life of the most famous criminal organization, but the way the author portrays his characters is almost surrealistic, so that it somewhat resembles a bloody mafia fairy tale.
