Sa Misisipija

Sa Misisipija

Thomas Mayn Reid

The novel is set in the American South, along the Mississippi River, at a time when racial division and slavery were deeply rooted in society.

The novel begins with Maurice's arrival in Louisiana, where he buys a plantation on the banks of the Mississippi. There he meets Aurora, a beautiful quadron woman, and their love develops. However, their relationship encounters obstacles due to racial prejudices and the laws of the time. The main plot revolves around Maurice and Aurora's attempts to stay together despite the social and legal prohibitions that forbid marriage between a white man and a mixed-race woman. Their love is threatened by the vile Vorsythe, who uses intrigue and lies to discredit Maurice and force Aurora to surrender to him. The story is full of adventures, duels, escapes, fires, and the fight for justice. Maurice faces numerous obstacles in order to save Aurora and expose Vorsythe's crimes. The end of the novel is tragic: although justice partially triumphs, Aurora dies, and Maurice remains broken. Love has failed to overcome the social shackles of the world of that time.
