As he has reached the age when almost everyone he loves is far away or deceased, Andrew Blake no longer enjoys even the dog parties he has arranged with his companion Richard all his life. Overnight, he decides to leave the running of his company to a secretary in order to get a job as a butler in France, a country with which he has fond memories. At the Beauvillier estate, a colorful group awaits him: the landlady Nathalie who spends her time in strange activities, the temperamental cook Odile, the young maid Manon in love troubles, the quick-witted manager Philippe, and even the impressionable cat Mephisto.
