Teško je, a čini se čak i nemoguće, pronaći dovoljno opsežan naslov koji bi predstavio delo tako složeno kao što je ova kombinacija muzičkog leksikona, vodiča kroz simfonijsku, oratorijumsku, kamernu i opersku muziku.

Uostalom, i sam autor, istaknuti holandski muzikolog Kasper Hoveler, bio je zadovoljan prilično nejasnim naslovom Ks-I-Z der Muziek. To, međutim, nimalo nije sprečilo tako dobro zamišljeno delo da za kratko vreme doživi brojna izdanja (naš prevod je rađen prema 15. izdanju), a prodrlo je i u zemlje sa tako bogatom muzičkom literaturom kao što su, na primer Nemačka i Francuska.
