Teško je, a čini se čak i nemoguće, pronaći dovoljno obuhvatan naslov kojim bi se predstavilo djelo tako kompleksno kao što je ova kombinacija muzičkog leksikona, vodiča kroz simfonijsku, oratorijsku, komornu i opernu glazbu.

Uostalom i sam autor, istaknuti nizozemski muzikolog Casper Hoeweler, zadovoljio se sasvim neodređenim naslovom X-Y-Z der Muziek. To, međutim, nije nimalo smetalo da ovako zamišljeno djelo doživi u kratkom roku mnogobrojna izdanja (naš prevod je rađen prema petnaestom), a prodre i u zemlje sa tako bogatom muzickom literaturom kao sto su, na primjer, Njemačka i Francuska.
