Etičnost i socijalnost na kušnji (socijalna problematika u Hrvatskoj)
Stjepan Baloban's book Ethics and Socialism on Trial is a valuable read because the social teaching of the Church brings it closer to anyone who is sincerely interested in that teaching.
It introduces him to the observation and reflection of concrete social reality in the spirit of the Church's social doctrine, and in the same spirit offers guidelines for solving problems, grasping them at their root and leaving room for the realization of freedom and creativity of each individual in choosing a concrete solution. The book itself consists of a series of articles published by the author in the period between 1990 and 1997. The articles were created in response to the challenge of certain social movements and the needs of that period, and were written for different magazines. Thus, the book, on the one hand, talks about concrete historical occasions, which is a kind of advantage. On the other hand, one encounters repetitions that could not be avoided because, apart from minor interventions, the texts remained faithful to the original form. The mentioned repetitions do not interfere with the text in its integrity, in fact it can be said that they help the reader more in determining and connecting the "material". Although it is a series of articles that were created in different events, it can be said that collected in this way in a book, they form a whole. They are united by the intention of the author, which he himself points out in the Preface of the book, and is noticeable in all the articles: to help the lay Christian believer in his social life. Namely, after the historical upheaval in Croatia in 1990, this life was greatly changed, and in it the Christian suddenly found himself faced with numerous new questions and problems, both in relation to public life (economy, politics, social life in general) and in relation to religious life.
