Uvjeti preživljavanja čovječanstva

Iring Fetscher

Is it still possible to save the progress?

The studies collected here strive for a comprehensive diagnosis of the "ecological crisis" of industrial society and outline alternative solutions. One reviewer accused the author of acting like "Kassandra". After Christa Wolf's book of the same name at the latest, he had to know, of course, that Kassandra was only too right. Her curse was that no one believed her. If I believed in such a curse, I would give up publishing works on the problems of the human environment and "alternative civilization". Environmental issues have led to a crisis of progress. When we critically deal with the development of the European concept of progress, we will, of course, conclude that its extremely narrow concept, which is reduced to mere quantitative economic growth, is called into question. Instead of resignation, which is expressed towards every possible future progress, we should talk about aiming for qualitative progress, which can be realized. A review of the history of progress thought, all from its Christian sources, can contribute to a new definition. Today, for the majority of critical contemporaries of highly industrialized society, the naive equating of industrial-technical progress with cultural-moral progress has been lost.
