Baraka Pet Be i druge novele

Baraka Pet Be i druge novele

Miroslav Krleža

Count Maksimilijan Axelrode, a descendant of the ancient Austrian nobility, is the head of a large hospital that, under the banner of the Red Cross, is located behind the war lines in the area between Stanislavów and Kraków.

In a critical situation in August 1916, when the arrival of the Russians was expected after the Austrian retreat, Axelrode went to a safer area together with the elegant ladies who helped him and half of the staff. In anticipation of the arrival of the second army, anarchy ensues in the hospital. He gets drunk and two nurses are raped; mobile patients and captured Russians, who perform auxiliary work, were also unarmed. The Austrian counterattack was successful, so the enemy does not reach the hospital. Axelrode returns, restoring order. Seven prisoners were shot. The wounded were made to take part in a ghostly parade on stretchers in which they saluted the Austrian flag, and later the management staff drank and toasted in honor of the victory in front of the barracks. The narration is mainly focused on the description of the Pet Be barracks, where the immobile wounded, operated on and those who cannot be saved lie.
