A serial killer burns his victims on prehistoric stone circles in the Lake District National Park in the English province of Cumbria.
He leaves no clues and the police are helpless. When the name of the disgraced Inspector Washington Poe is discovered carved into the remains of the third victim, he returns to work and becomes part of an investigation he doesn't want to be a part of. And when he gets Tilly Bradshaw as a partner, a top analyst but a socially quite maladjusted person, this strange couple soon discovers a clue meant only for Poe. For some inexplicable reason, he is part of the plan of an extremely skilled assassin. As the number of victims rises unstoppably, it becomes clear to Poe that he has invested more in this case than he could have ever imagined.
