The main character, Michael Kind, comes from a Jewish family and decides to become a rabbi. During his ministry, he meets Leslie, the daughter of a Protestant pastor, with whom he falls in love. Despite their differences in faith, their love blossoms, and Leslie decides to convert to Judaism so they can be together.

The novel explores the challenges the couple face: from the rejection of the Jewish community due to Leslie's background, to their personal struggles with identity and belonging. Leslie, faced with the pressures and isolation, struggles with depression, which further strains their marriage.

Through flashbacks, the reader learns about Michael's family history, from his Orthodox grandfather to his own experiences, providing insight into the evolution of the Jewish community in America throughout the 20th century.
