The novel is set in the Northern Territory of Australia in 1978, where isolation and harsh living conditions bring together five women from diverse backgrounds.

Sybil, the matriarch of the family's Fairvale Station cattle farm, starts a book club to support her daughter-in-law Kate, who is struggling to adapt to life in the Australian outback. The club is joined by Rita, Sybil's longtime friend and a nurse in the Royal Flying Doctor Service; Sallyanne, a mother of three who dreams of escaping an unhappy marriage; and Della, a Texan looking for a new start working on the farm. Through their shared love of books, these women develop strong friendships and support each other as they face personal challenges and the social expectations of the time. The novel explores themes of female solidarity, adaptation, and strength in the face of the hardships of life in isolated communities.
