Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića

Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić

The Strange Adventures of the Apprentice Hlapić is a classic of Croatian children's literature, first published in 1913, and the first post-war edition from 1952 retains the rich narrative value of the original.

The novel follows a young and honest shoemaker's apprentice, Hlapić, who leaves the house of his strict master, Mrkonja, to gain life experience and see the world.

During his seven-day journey, Hlapić experiences various adventures and meets interesting characters – a poor girl, Gita, and her dog, Bundaš, traveling actors, peasants, and also dangerous villains. Through these incidents, he shows his virtues: courage, diligence, kindness, and a sense of justice. His behavior often serves as a role model, and through his eyes the reader learns about social injustices, poverty, but also the power of kindness.

At the end of the novel, Hlapić returns home where he discovers that Mrkonja actually wanted him well. Reconciliation and learning about his own origins further round out the narrative, emphasizing the importance of family, forgiveness, and love.

The work is simultaneously an exciting travelogue, a moral story, and an allegory of growing up. Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić managed to create a universal hero whose values transcend time and place.
