Jedna Mađarska jesen

Jedna Mađarska jesen

Ivan Ivanji

This is a novel with autobiographical elements, in which the author, through the character of a writer in his more mature years, reflects on his own life, history, identity, and the political reality of Hungary at the time.

The novel is set in the autumn of 1986, in Budapest, where the main character is staying as a scholarship holder in a writers' house. During his stay, he recalls the past – personal traumas, Nazism, camps, socialism, but also disappointment in all political systems. He meets fellow writers, intellectuals and bureaucrats, and through their fates and conversations he gains deeper insights into socio-political processes, especially the stagnation of the socialist system that is nearing its end.
