Iz prve ruke

Iz prve ruke

Joyce Cary

Joyce Cary's novel follows Gulley Jimson, an eccentric and unconventional artist in London. The story is told in the first person, through Gulley's lively, witty and chaotic voice, revealing his obsession with art and conflict with social norms.

Gulley, an elderly painter living in poverty, is dedicated to creating a monumental work of art, a mural inspired by the Bible, despite financial problems and legal difficulties. The novel follows Gulley's adventures as he struggles with his own irresponsibility, manipulates friends and acquaintances, and evades debtors. His relationship with art is passionate but destructive - he destroys old paintings and breaks the law in his pursuit of perfection. Key characters include Sara, his ex-wife, and Nosey, a young admirer who supports Gulley's vision. The novel explores the tension between artistic freedom and social expectations, portraying Gulley as a genius and a rebel, but also as a tragically incapable of fitting in with the world.

Through humor and irony, Cary creates a portrait of an artist who sacrifices everything for his vision, while his unpredictable nature provokes laughter and pity. The novel deals with themes of creativity, morality, and transience, highlighting Gulley's untamed passion for art, even at the cost of self-destruction.
