Jo Nesbo

Jo Nesbø's eleventh novel about detective Harry Hole, set in Oslo. Harry, now a lecturer at the police academy, tries to lead a stable life with Rakel and her son Oleg, but his past catches up with him when a serial killer appears.

A series of brutal murders occur in Oslo: the victims are young women, murdered in a sadistic manner, and the clues point to a vampiric ritual – bites and bloodsucking. The police, led by Katrina Bratt, invite Harry to return to the investigation, although he hesitates because of Rakel’s promise to avoid dangerous cases. However, when it becomes clear that the killer is imitating crimes from Harry’s past, including the actions of Valentine Gjertsen, an old enemy, Harry gets involved.

The investigation uncovers a complex web of lies, manipulation and personal motives. Harry, with the help of his old team and new allies like psychologist Stine, tries to predict the killer’s moves. The killer, ingenious and elusive, is always one step ahead, challenging Harry on a personal level. At the same time, Harry struggles with his own demons – alcoholism, guilt and fear for his family.

Nesbø masterfully combines suspense, psychological depth and dark humor. The novel explores themes of obsession, revenge and sacrifice, with a detailed depiction of police work. The atmosphere of Oslo and Harry's inner struggle make The Thirst a tense thriller full of twists and turns that keeps the reader in suspense until the last page.
