Priča je ispričana iz perspektive devojčice koja odrasta u ruralnom delu Francuske, u siromašnoj i društveno izolovanoj porodici italijanskih imigranata. Dženi, majka naratorke, u selu ima nadimak „luda“ jer se ponaša drugačije od ostalih – slobodna je, strastvena, prkosna i ne mari za društvene norme. Dok meštani preziru gledaju na Dženi, njena ćerka je istovremeno obožava i plaši. Odnos između majke i ćerke pun je nežnosti, ali i surovosti, nesporazuma i bola. Dženini neobični postupci često izazivaju sukobe, a njena neprilagođenost dovodi do sve veće izolacije porodice. Roman istražuje teme usamljenosti, društvene marginalizacije, majčinske ljubavi i patnje, kao i napetosti između slobode i cene koju sloboda nosi. Jezik je poetan, ali i ogoljen, sa osećajem stalne nelagode i tuge koji visi nad pričom.
