Gorski vijenac

Petar Petrović Njegoš

"Mountain Wreath" is an epic-dramatic work of Peter II. Petrović Njegoš, published in 1847. The plot is set in Montenegro at the end of the 17th century and depicts the struggle of Montenegrins against the Ottomans.

The main motive is the investigation of poturica - dealing with those who converted to Islam - in order to preserve the Orthodox faith and national identity. The work is written in the form of a dialogue, and the central character is bishop Danilo, who faces moral and political dilemmas. Next to him, important heroes are Vuk Mićunović and Duke Batrić. Njegoš celebrates courage, honor and freedom, but also shows the tragedy of internal conflicts. "Mountain Wreath" is one of the most important works of South Slavic literature, full of philosophical reflections, folk wisdom and epic descriptions of the struggle for survival. Its strong language and poetic form make it a masterpiece.
