Andrea Camilleri

The Shape of Water (1994), the first novel in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series, introduces us to the world of Sicilian detective Salvo Montalbano. Set in the fictional town of Vigàtu, the novel combines criminal intrigue with humor and Sicil

The story begins when two garbage collectors find the dead body of a prominent politician, Luparello, in the Pastorella district, notorious for prostitution and crime. Luparello, who apparently died of a heart attack during an encounter with a prostitute, becomes the subject of an investigation led by Montalbano, a charming but stubborn inspector. Although the case seems simple, Montalbano doubts the official version and digs deeper, uncovering a complex web of political corruption, family secrets and power struggles.

Montalbano, with the help of his team and his lover Livia, investigates with the support of friends such as the journalist Zito and the eccentric Ingrid, discovering that Luparello's death was staged to cover up a larger conspiracy. Key clues lead to political rivals and ulterior motives, and Montalbano faces moral dilemmas as he balances justice and compromise in a corrupt system.

The novel is known for its vivid depiction of Sicily, its culture, food and dialect, as well as for Montalbano's sarcastic humor and love of life. Camilleri masterfully blends suspense and social commentary, creating a compelling portrait of a detective fighting injustice in a world full of contradictions.
