Der Protagonist Colin Derwent ist ein ganz normaler Mann, dessen Liebe zu Betty Findon durch den charmanten, aber bösartigen Philip Sevilla, halb Engländer, halb Spanier, bedroht wird. Sevilla ist ein typischer Verführer und Betrüger: Er verführt junge Frauen, bringt sie nach Paris, lässt sie mittellos zurück und verlangt dann ein Lösegeld, damit sie aufhören. Als er herausfindet, dass Derwent über 1.000 Pfund zahlen will, um Sevilla von Betty loszueisen, verspottet er ihn und sagt ihm, dass er ihn gerne töten würde – allerdings ohne ein perfektes Alibi.
