At the beginning of the summer holidays before the outbreak of World War II, on the estate of a wealthy English family, the holiday idyll is shattered by an unfortunate event.
Thirteen-year-old Briony, a girl with a vivid imagination and ambitions to become a writer, baselessly accuses Robbie, her older sister Cecilia's boyfriend, of raping her underage cousin Lola. With this fabricated statement, she changes the course of his and her sister's fate. Robbie spends several years in prison, then in the war.
