Metoda borbe: 2. Vježbanje tehnike

Bruce Lee, Mito Uyehara

The second part of "Fighting Methods" is dedicated to perfecting the technique and turning knowledge into a practical fighting skill. Bruce here abandons the classic approach of "form for form's sake" and introduces the concept of "training with intention

Key topics and exercises:

  • Five attack methods (SNA, PIA, ABD, ABC, RIA) are elaborated in detail through progressive drills: from a simple attack on the focusing glove to combinations in motion and under pressure from a partner.
  • Basic tools of Jeet Kune Do – straight finger kick to the eyes, straight lead, finger jab, low side kick, hook kick and stop-kick – are practiced first statically on a mirror or bag, then in motion, and then in combination with evasion and counterattack.
  • Attribute training – Lee provides programs for speed (fast punches on the bag, shadowboxing with 0.5–1 kg weights), strength (isometric punches, core exercises), endurance (interval skipping rope, sparring in 3+2 min rounds) and timing (“broken rhythm” drills and “burning hand” exercises).
  • Partner drills – from classic chi sao (similar to wing chun, but adapted to JKD), through “energy drills” and “attack-by-drawing” to free sparring with minimal protection in order to develop real sensitivity.
  • The principle of “economy of movement” – each technique is “erased” until only the most effective one remains. Lee demands that each movement can be performed with full force in a split second from any position.

The most famous exercise from this section is the famous “one-inch punch” and its variations (3 inches, 6 inches), with which he proves that power comes from body structure and explosiveness, and not from momentum. A special chapter is also dedicated to footwork – “broken footwork”, “pendulum step” and “side-step” as the basis for entering/exiting range.

Lee concludes that true technique is not a fixed form, but a living skill that is constantly adapting to the opponent. “Practice until you forget the technique – then you will truly own it.”

Co-author and editor Mito Uyehara was a long-time friend of Lee, founder of Black Belt magazine and publisher of Ohara Publications, who after Bruce's death in 1973, based on his notes, manuscripts, photographs and interviews, compiled and published the four-volume series "Bruce Lee's Fighting Method" in 1977-1978.
