Kutija žigica

Vjekoslav Boban

Due to its fragmentary and concise form, Matchbox leaves the impression of a mosaic – each story functions independently, but together they create a picture of a world marked by silence, tension, and unspoken emotions.

The Matchbox is a collection of short prose by Vjekoslav Boban, structured as a series of short, often very condensed and lyrically intoned stories connected by a common atmosphere of anxiety, everyday life and the search for identity in a late socialist urban environment. The stories are most often set in small, seemingly unimportant spaces – apartments, hallways, cafes, workshops, trams – which the author transforms into stages for the characters’ inner dramas. The plot is not in the foreground; the emphasis is on emotional states, memories and brief snips of consciousness. Small objects, including the title matchbox, become symbols of transience, the fragility of human relationships and attempts to hold on to something that is constantly slipping away. The characters struggle with feelings of isolation, misunderstanding and the elusiveness of meaning. Boban often uses a minimalist style, relying on suggestive images and details that support the melancholic and sometimes ironic atmosphere of the collection.
