Ralje

Peter Benchley

The peaceful resort town of Amity Island is transformed into a scene of terror when a great white shark appears. The conflict between fear, selfishness and courage reveals the true nature of a community faced with a threat from the sea.

The novel Jaws (1974) is a classic of suspense and ecological thriller that inspired the film of the same name by Steven Spielberg. The plot begins when a shark attack shakes the idyllic tourist town of Amity on the Atlantic coast of the United States. At first, local authorities try to cover up the event so as not to jeopardize the tourist season, but after several more deadly attacks, the meteor of tension turns into a fight for survival.

Leading the three main characters — police chief Brody, scientist Hooper and shark hunter Quint — Benchley skillfully builds a conflict between reason, instinct and greed. As the shark approaches the coast, tensions between people grow as much as their fear.

Behind the tense plot lies a social message: the novel depicts a community willing to risk human lives for profit, so Jaws becomes a metaphor for moral failure and the conflict between man and the nature he wants to control. The realism of the details, the rhythm of the narration, and the psychological layers of the characters make the novel a thriller that transcends genre and becomes a disturbing portrait of contemporary society.
