Tvorba riječi u hrvatskom književnom jeziku: Nacrt za gramatiku

Stjepan Babić

In his work Word Formation in the Croatian Literary Language – A Grammar Draft, Stjepan Babić systematically discusses word formation in standard Croatian and lays the foundation for contemporary morphological analysis.

Word Formation in the Croatian Literary Language – A Grammar Draft by Stjepan Babić is one of the most important works of Croatian grammar of the 20th century. In it, the author thoroughly elaborates on the formation system of the Croatian standard language, starting from the principles of structural linguistics, but also relying on the rich linguistic tradition and actual usage. The book systematically explains the ways of word formation: compounding, derivation, prefixation, suffixation, conversion and shortening, with numerous examples from the literary and general language. Babić explores the relationships between word formation and meaning and shows how formation patterns contribute to the development and expressiveness of the language. He attaches particular importance to normative issues and the distinction of formation possibilities in the standard in relation to dialects. The work has great pedagogical and scientific value and serves as a fundamental manual for the study of morphology and systematic grammar of the Croatian language.

Words are like people: they are born, grow, travel, cross the borders of municipalities, provinces and states, adapt, change nationality and citizenship, reproduce, age and die, and – unlike people, similar to gods – they can also be resurrected.
