America

America

Tom Coraghessan Boyle

A social novel set in a first-class private neighborhood on the outskirts of Los Angeles in the 1990s.

The novel follows the lives of two couples, Delaney and Kyrae Mossbacher, a monthly science columnist and real estate agent, liberal-humanistic members of the white middle class, and Candide and America Rincon, illegal Mexican immigrants, constantly looking for low-paying, manual jobs, who live in a makeshift camp in a canyon near the Mossbachers' private estate. Their lives intertwine, creating a bleak picture filled with mutual fear and hatred of members of different social classes, while at the same time everyone struggles to find a sense of security and prosperity in a world that is rapidly eroding both socially and ecologically.
