Na kraju službenog puta

Na kraju službenog puta

Heinrich Böll

The humorous idyll in the country-family farce is easily read as the latest copy of a suppressed social rebellion.

The plot of the novel begins with a trial against a father and son, Beni and Johan Grill, accused of setting fire to a military vehicle of the German army. During the trial, the background of the event and the relationship between the individual and the state system are gradually revealed. Son Beni is a rebellious young man who refuses to blindly accept authority and social rules. His father Johan, although a calmer and older man, gradually stands by his son. Their act of burning a military jeep becomes a symbol of protest against senseless orders, bureaucracy and the militarization of society. Through witness statements, court hearings and ironic situations, Bel shows the absurdity of the administration and the way society tries to punish individuality and free thinking.
