Rakovica: o 60. godišnjici smrti Eugena Kvaternika

Milutin Cihlar Nehajev

Nehajev's "Rakovica", in the edition edited by Blaž Jurišić, presents the Rakovica Rebellion, its causes and ideas. Nehajev did not finish the book due to his sudden death; it was completed and edited by Blaž Jurišić.

Rakovica – on the 60th anniversary of the death of Eugen Kvaternik, edited by Blaž Jurišić, is a particularly valuable edition of Nehajev’s consideration of the Rakovica Uprising of 1871. The work describes the political circumstances and ideas that led to the attempted uprising in Krajina, with the aim of creating an independent Croatian state. Through the portrayal of Kvaternik as a determined, idealistic, but tragic leader, Nehajev highlights the frustration of the Croatian national movement under Austro-Hungarian rule and the moral and intellectual strength of the people involved in this act of resistance.

The special significance of this edition lies in the history of its creation. Nehajev was preparing the book for publication and working on its final form, but he was interrupted by his sudden death on April 7, 1931. The manuscript remained unfinished, so Blaž Jurišić took on the task of completing it, editing it, and critically editing it. Jurišić has supplemented the text with notes, explanations, and additional historical insights, while taking care to retain the original tone and structure of Nehaj's manuscript.

The book therefore has a double value: historical, because it provides a comprehensive account of one of the key episodes of Croatian political history, and literary-documentary, because it represents the author's last work, completed posthumously. In this form, Rakovica further emphasizes the symbolism of the Rakovica Uprising as a point at which political idealism, historical necessity, and personal sacrifice collide.
