Turci idu / Ljubica / Kanarinčeva ljubovca
The book 20 Collected Works of August Šenoa combines three diverse narratives: a dramatic portrayal of fear of the Turkish invasion, a romantic story of unhappy love, and a witty and warm humorous tale about little people and their weaknesses.
The Turks Are Coming / Ljubica / Canary's Lover is the 20th book in the Collected Works of August Šenoa published by Naklada knjižara Preporod. This volume brings three stories that show Šenoa's breadth – from historical drama and romance to light humor.
The Turks Are Coming is a dramatic and tense story set during the Turkish incursions into the Croatian borders. Šenoa masterfully evokes the atmosphere of fear, uncertainty and heroism in the border regions, creating vivid images of folk life under the constant threat of invasion.
Ljubica is a romantic and melancholic story about love, social barriers and women's destiny. Through the fate of young Ljubica, Šenoa depicts the conflict of feelings and social norms of the 19th century, with characteristic emotional depth and warmth.
Kanarinčeva ljubovca is a witty and cheerful humorous story that describes the everyday happenings and accidents of ordinary people. The story is full of mild irony, likeable characters and Šenoa's recognizable humor, which brings a lighter, more entertaining tone.
In these stories, Šenoa moves from serious historical motifs to romantic plots to cheerful pictures of life, always with rich language, lively dialogues and a deep understanding of human nature.
This edition, as well as the entire Revival edition (1942–1943), is adorned with recognizable and artistically powerful illustrations by Andrija Maurović. His dynamic drawings on the cover and within the text excellently follow the atmosphere of each story – from dramatic Turkish scenes to intimate and humorous scenes.
