Hrvatska uvijek katolička

Juraj Kocijančić

Croatia Always Catholic (1940), a popular-historical and apologetic book by a Samobor parish priest that proves the thousand-year Catholic loyalty of the Croatian people, from the time of their immigration until the 20th century.

Juraj Kocijančić was a Catholic priest, a long-time parish priest in Samobor and a canon. He was actively involved in pastoral work, history and Catholic journalism and belonged to the circle of interwar Croatian Catholic intellectuals and writers. He is also a well-known author of other works on Samobor's devotion to the Catholic faith and a collaborator on collections of works on Samobor's history.

The book is written in the spirit of the Catholic national revival and the interwar Catholic renewal. The author systematically shows how the Croats were a Catholic people from their very beginnings, emphasizing the role of the Church in preserving Croatian identity through centuries of struggle against various invaders, heresies and foreign influences. Particular emphasis is placed on fidelity to the Holy See, the contribution of Croatian saints, bishops and monks and the role of Catholicism as a protective wall of the Croatian nation.

The style is clear, polemical and stimulating, intended for a wider religious and nationally conscious audience. The work belongs to the typical Catholic publicism of the time, which saw faith and nation as inseparable. It was published on the eve of World War II, in a period of heightened national and religious sentiment.

Today, this book is a rare antiquarian publication, interesting for the study of Croatian Catholic thought, the interwar Catholic movement, and the relationship between faith and national identity. Kocijančić later published expanded editions or similar works (e.g. The Pope and the Croatian People), which shows his continuous activity on these topics.

The book reflects the spirit of the time in which Catholicism was considered the foundation of Croatian existence and culture, and the author wanted to strengthen this worldview among believers with his work.
