The story begins in 1888 when the English nobleman Lord Greystoke and his wife are marooned on the west coast of Africa after a shipwreck. After their deaths, their newborn child is found and raised by Kala, a female ape from the tribe of great apes (Mangani). The boy is named Tarzan (white skin) and grows up to be the strongest and smartest of the apes.
The novel follows Tarzan's development from wild child to an adult who discovers his noble origins, learns to read and write from his father's books, and meets the first white people – among them Jane Porter. The work is full of exciting battles, discoveries, romance, and conflicts between nature and civilization.
This is the foundation of the entire series and a classic work of adventure literature. In interwar Croatia and Yugoslavia, Kugli's editions of Tarzan were extremely popular among young readers. Tarzan as an Ape is considered the most important book of the series because it establishes the legendary character of the ape-man. Today, the edition is in demand among collectors of old popular literature.
