Tafeln zur Bestimmung des kubischen Inhaltes walzenförmiger und entgipfelter paraboloidischer Rund‑, dann vierkantiger Hölzer
A classic forestry collection of tables for quickly calculating the volume of parabolic and cylindrical logs and square-sided hewn wood.
In the introduction, the author clearly explains the measurement procedures (length, lower/upper and middle diameter) and explains why the parabolic model of a tree is more relevant in field practice than an ideal cone or cylinder. This is followed by overview tables for direct reading of cubic capacity and a copper-cut measurement scheme - a combination of geometry and 19th-century experience that standardized the estimation of wood mass.
The author was a Prandau-Norman forester in Slavonia; his manuscripts and traces of his work are kept in collections related to the Valpovo estate, and he was included in national biographical lexicons. This copy is beautifully bound, complete and very neatly preserved - above the standards for Osijek printed matter of that time.
A rare local edition from Osijek from 1865, which appears extremely rarely in circulation, and public collections record only a few copies. As an early standard of measurement in logging, shipping and timber trade, the book is a primary source for research into the development of the local Slavonian timber industry: it documents how foresters and entrepreneurs calculated volumes, planned fellings and valued logs on their way to sawmills and river ports. Therefore, it is equally interesting for economic historians, foresters and museum/heritage institutions.
For collectors of early Osijek books, it represents a representative title from a local press (Carl Lehmann & Comp., Essek) with a clear regional stamp and excellent preservation – a desirable foundation stone of any thematic collection on Osijek and Slavonia.
