Mark Twain

Prince Edward and poor boy Tom accidentally switch places. Living each other's lives, they learn about the injustices, privileges, and realities of society in 16th-century England.

The Prince and the Pauper is a historical novel by Mark Twain set in 16th-century England, during the reign of King Henry VIII. The work tells an interesting and instructive story about two boys who look almost identical, although they come from completely different social classes.

Tom Canty is a poor boy from a London neighborhood where poverty and deprivation reign. On the other hand, Edward Tudor lives in a royal palace as the heir to the throne surrounded by wealth and privilege. When the boys accidentally meet, they swap clothes out of curiosity. Due to their incredible similarity, no one notices the swap, and each of them remains trapped in the other's life.

While Tom tries to play the role of a prince and find his way among the nobility, Edward goes through the difficult life of ordinary people. He is exposed to poverty, violence and injustice, and learns firsthand the problems of his future subjects. At the same time, Tom realizes how responsible and demanding royal duties are.
