History of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje – Selected Chapters by Ivan pl. Rožić, is an abridged and selected version of the author's thorough work on one of the oldest and most distinctive institutions in Croatian history.
The book systematically traces the development of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje from the arrival of the Croats and the parish of Turovo Polje, through the acquisition of special privileges and statutes in 1278, the century-long struggle for autonomy, the wars against the Turks, and all the way to its abolition in 1947 and subsequent attempts at restoration around 1990. Rožić pays special attention to correcting historical untruths and prejudices (including a critical analysis of some of Nada Klaić's theses), emphasizing how the people of Turopolje defended their special status and identity within various state frameworks for centuries.
The author, a native of Buševec, a member of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje and a long-time researcher, divided the book into a chronological overview, selected thematic units, and critical analyses. The style is clear, documented and engaging – its goal is to restore pride to the people of Turopolje and objectively present their role in Croatian history.
This is an important popular-scientific work that shows Turopolje not as a folklore area, but as a conscious community of noblemen-peasants who fought for freedom, land and self-government. Ideal for anyone interested in local history, Croatian nobility and medieval and modern heritage.
