Bangkok 8

Bangkok 8

John Burdett

Bangkok 8 (2003) by John Burdett is a crime novel set in exotic Bangkok. Through Sonchai's introspection and vivid descriptions of Bangkok, Burdett creates a tense story about a world where the lines between good and evil are blurring.

The main character, Detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep, half-Thai and Buddhist, investigates the gruesome murder of US Marine William Bradley, found dead in a locked Mercedes under a bridge, surrounded by poisonous snakes. Sonchai and his partner Pichai witness the crime, but Pichai is killed by a snake bite, which sets Sonchai, driven by Buddhist beliefs and a desire for revenge, on a dangerous mission. With the help of FBI agent Kimberley Jones, with whom he develops a romantic relationship, Sonchai plunges into the dark world of the Bangkok underworld, intertwined with corruption, drug trafficking, prostitution and jade smuggling. The investigation leads him to the powerful American jade merchant Sylvester Warren and the mysterious Fatima, connected to Bradley. Sonchai struggles with an inner conflict between his spirituality and his thirst for revenge, while uncovering the complex connections between crime and police corruption. The novel explores the themes of East-West cultural differences, Buddhism and the Thai sex industry, with a touch of dark humor.
