Slijed zločina

Slijed zločina

William Landay

The debut novel by former prosecutor William Landay, praised for its authenticity, combines the suspense of Grisham with the depth of Lehane. A must-read for fans of crime dramas about corruption and human vulnerability.

The story follows Ben Truman, a 24-year-old police chief in the small town of Versailles, Maine, where he has inherited his father's post after family tragedies: his mother committed suicide due to Alzheimer's disease, and his father, an alcoholic veteran, left him in an emotional void. Ben, a former history student, suffers from boredom and loneliness in an idyllic but stuffy rural environment.

His life is changed by the discovery of the body of Robert Danziger, a famous Boston prosecutor, in an abandoned cottage. He is brutally murdered, and the clues point to Harold Braxton, the leader of the Mission Posse gang from the poor Boston neighborhood of Mission Flats - an area rife with drugs, violence and corruption. Ben, although a rookie, refuses to leave the case to a higher power and heads to Boston, where he is confronted with urban chaos: dirty streets, suspicious police officers and bureaucracy.

With the help of John Kelly, a retired homicide detective and the father of Caroline, an assistant prosecutor, Ben enters the labyrinth of the investigation. Kelly, an experienced mentor, teaches him the “shadow dance” – the subtle signs of lies and the alliance between criminals and the law. The case becomes intertwined with the past: the murder of Officer Artie Trudel 15 years ago and the suicide of the killer, revealing a chain of revenge and ulterior motives. Ben meets Martin Gittens, a controversial police officer with a shady past, and faces resistance: lies, threats and doubts about his own guilt.

Landay’s style is tense and realistic, with deep character portraits and the contrast between the calm Mineo and the wild Boston. The book is not just a thriller, but an exploration of legacy – how the past bites the present, the ethical dilemmas of justice and the price of truth. Ben grows from a naive country boy to a tenacious investigator, but pays a high personal price.
