The main character is a disabled Vietnam veteran Moloney, the owner of a cafe that won't open. One day, a young Indian woman, Caney, appears at his door, silent and looking for work. Moloney hires her, and her presence slowly changes life in the cafe and the entire town. The cafe becomes a gathering place for various unusual, lonely and broken characters - from old cowboys to teenagers in love to people looking for a new beginning.

Letts masterfully portrays the little people on the margins of American society with a lot of humor, tenderness and understanding. The novel explores themes of loneliness, loss, addiction, racism and the opportunity for redemption. Through everyday conversations at the bar and small events, deep human dramas and joys are revealed.

The style is light, emotional and optimistic despite the heavy themes – typical of Letts (author of the bestselling Where the Heart Is). The book talks about the importance of community, small acts of kindness and the ability of people to change and help each other. An ideal read for fans of feel-good novels with depth.
