Diseases of Addiction was an important textbook and handbook for doctors, nurses, social workers, and students, and it is also a popular and professional book intended for a wider circle of readers interested in the issue of addiction.
Diseases of Addiction is one of Hudolin's key books, in which he systematically discusses addictions as a group of diseases (alcoholism, drug addiction, smoking and other addictions). The book represents a synthesis of his scientific and clinical work at the time and promotes a socio-ecological approach to addictions. Hudolin does not view addiction exclusively as an individual medical problem, but as a complex - phenomenon in which the following participate:
- biological factors,
- psychological factors,
- family,
- the wider social and cultural environment. The book is a classic work of Croatian and Yugoslav alcoholology. In it, Hudolin clearly articulated his holistic, humanistic and socially oriented approach to addictions, which later became internationally recognized (especially in Italy, where his model of clubs for treated alcoholics was widely accepted).
