Tiefer Süden

Tiefer Süden

Gwen Bristow

Gwen Bristow's epic novel about the birth of the American South in the late 18th century. Through the love and marriage of Judith and Philip, the struggle for survival and the creation of a plantation dynasty in the wilderness of Louisiana is depicted.

“Deep Summer” (originally published in 1937) is the first novel in Gwen Bristow’s famous plantation trilogy, which takes the reader to the second half of the 18th century, when Louisiana was a pristine and wild frontier country. The story begins with the arrival of the young and daring Judith Sheramy with her family from Virginia, and her meeting with Philip Larne, a charming and ambitious aristocrat from South Carolina.

Despite their differences in origin and lifestyle, Judith and Philip fall in love and decide to build a life together in the harsh conditions of the swampy South. Through hard work, fighting tropical diseases, floods, political turmoil and the American War of Independence, the couple establish one of the most powerful plantation estates in the region from a modest log cabin. The story follows their relationship, full of love but also conflicting natures, and lays the foundations of a family dynasty whose destiny spans centuries.

Gwen Bristow depicts Louisiana's transition from untamed wilderness to prosperous but controversial plantation community with remarkable historical accuracy and vivid style. The novel explores themes of pioneer spirit, female empowerment, social divisions, and the creation of a new American identity, remaining one of the finest classics of historical fiction from the American South.
