Birds at the Fountain is a collection of poems for children. Desanka Maksimović, one of the most important Serbian poets of the 20th century, addresses young readers here with gentle, picturesque, and warm verses. The title poem, “Birds at the Fountain,” describes a happy moment in nature: a passerby suddenly hears the sound of a mountain fountain and, running toward it, finds birds (tinsels, siskins, woodpeckers) gathered around the spring and chatting happily “like women doing laundry.” He hides behind a bush so as not to scare them and quietly enjoys their song.
