Mak Dizdar

Mak Dizdar's poetry collection The Stone Sleeper explores transience, human suffering, resistance to tyranny, and the eternal search for meaning through motifs of medieval stećak tombstones, the Old Bosnian language, and apocryphal texts.

The Stone Sleeper (1966) is one of the most important works of modern Bosnian and South Slavic literature. In this collection, Mehmedalija Mak Dizdar builds a unique poetic world inspired by medieval Bosnia, the Bogumil culture, and the inscriptions on stećaks – stone tombstones. Through a combination of Old Slavic vocabulary, archaisms, and modern poetic expression, Dizdar revives the voices of the "stone sleepers", ancestors who have spoken about universal human themes since ancient times. The collection is divided into four sections (A Word about Man, a Word about Heaven, a Word about Earth, and a Word about Darkness), in which the motifs of life, death, faith, persecution, and freedom intertwine. The central motif of the collection – a man standing upright under the stars – symbolizes resistance to tyranny, loneliness, and the search for truth despite suffering and historical insights. Stone is not just a monument to death, but a steadfast guardian of memory and human defiance. The Stone Sleeper transcends the local and historical framework and becomes a timeless philosophical meditation on the fate of a small man caught between earthly torment and the aspiration for cosmic expanses. It is a complete literary masterpiece of exceptional rhythm, metaphysical depth, and visual power.

The title poem, "The Black Rabbit," represents a kind of symbolist maneuver within "real" poetry, because like Baudelaire's "Albatross," it possesses a pronounced unambiguous charge.
