Mali čarobnjak

Mali čarobnjak

Zdravko Cepanec

The children's novel The Little Wizard by Zdravko Cepanec explores the themes of growing up, friendship, children's curiosity, and the power of imagination in everyday life through the imaginative and educational adventures of an unusual boy.

The Little Magician (1959) is a children's literary work by Croatian writer Zdravko Cepanec, published in a period when domestic children's literature was increasingly opening up to elements of fantasy, playfulness and free imagination. The central character of the novel is a boy who possesses an unusual ability to find magic in everyday, ordinary things and situations and create his own, imaginative world. Through a series of warm and humorous episodes, the author depicts children's adventures, school environment, play and relationships with friends and family. The "magic" in the title does not represent mere magic, but symbolizes children's creativity, naivety and the ability to see the world from a different, brighter perspective. The story unobtrusively carries educational and ethical messages about the importance of honesty, empathy, mutual help and preserving childish purity in the adult world. Written in accessible and lively language, The Little Magician is a precious example of Croatian children's prose from the mid-20th century that celebrates children's unfettered imagination and the magic hidden in the simplicity of everyday life.
