Now is Good
Sixteen-year-old Tessa, whose health is failing due to terminal leukemia, compiles a list of things she wants to experience before she dies. A poignant yet life-affirming story about growing up, love, and accepting the transience of life.
Jenny Downham’s moving debut novel, Before I Die (also known by the working title Now Is Good), is an incredibly powerful story about sixteen-year-old Tessa Scott, who has been diagnosed with a terminal form of leukemia. Refusing further grueling treatments, Tessa decides to live out her remaining months to the fullest and on her own terms. With the help of her best friend, she compiles a list of ten things she wants to experience before she dies—ranging from typical teenage desires, such as breaking rules and drinking alcohol, to deeper human needs like true love and intimacy. However, as her health deteriorates, the planned list loses its significance compared to the unexpected feelings that emerge when she meets her neighbor, Adam. This touching and emotionally charged drama focuses not merely on dying, but on celebrating life itself and the preciousness of every moment. Downham masterfully portrays the complex relationships within a family grappling with an inevitable loss, while touching upon themes of coming of age, forgiveness, and courage. The book achieved immense global popularity and was adapted into the well-known feature film Now Is Good in 2012.
