Američki izazov

Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber

The American Challenge by Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber is an iconic essay that warns of US economic dominance over Europe and calls for a European response. The book, a bestseller translated into over 20 languages, has sold millions of copies.

Servan-Schreiber claims that Europe is losing ground in the silent economic struggle due to lagging behind in management, technology and research capacity. Instead of fiscal or trade problems, he sees a lack of organizational skills and innovation as the key cause. He describes how American companies, such as IBM and General Electric, are taking over European market sectors, such as semiconductors and computers, using superior management methods and investing in education.

The author proposes a European counter-offensive through investment in education, technological innovation and federalism. He advocates a united Europe with a common currency and a decentralized France to counter American power. The book criticizes French political sclerosis and Gaullist ideology, calling for modernization and cooperation. Servan-Schreiber emphasizes that real power lies in the human spirit—the ability to think and create—not in raw materials or capital. The work inspired European nationalism and globalization debates, remaining relevant for its insightful predictions about the digital era and economic supremacy.
