Justine ili nedaće kreposti
"Justine or the Misadventures of Virtue" is a novel by the Marquis de Sade, first published in 1791.
The main character is a young and naive girl Justine, who, after the death of her parents, is separated from her sister Juliette. While Juliette chooses a life of vice and hedonism, Justine opts for the path of virtue, honesty, and faith in justice. However, her moral principles constantly lead her into danger and humiliation.
Throughout the novel, Justine falls into the hands of numerous unscrupulous characters – priests, nobles, monks – who exploit her, abuse her, and mock her unyielding honesty. Despite all the adversities, she remains true to her ideals. Sade uses her suffering to challenge the reader to question the idea of morality and social justice. Through Justine’s misfortunes, the author provocatively suggests that the world rewards vice while virtue is punished.
