Provincijalac

Provincijalac

Momo Kapor

As much as Foliranti is a story about Kapor's student days in Belgrade in the late fifties, Provincial is a book that evokes memories of his childhood in Sarajevo, where the author spent the first years of his life.

The Provincial is a novel about success and defeat, about evil and goodness, about eternity and death, but also about the passion with which we tread through life... And then, when you finally grab what you've been chasing all your life, you're not happy again! Your past, your childhood, your dear province, in the end, will drag you and drag you through day by day more and more irresistibly, so you will spend the rest of your life finding survivors, celebrating graduation anniversaries, or, like ghosts, visiting solitaires and supermarkets looking for the place where your house once stood! Niko N. Herceg, a successful thirty-seven-year-old television reporter, dived on August 7, 1974, near the island of Saplun, in search of a sunken ship about which he was filming a show, and surfaced on the same day in 1947 in another place, on an apparently unknown Adriatic beach. In an encounter with himself as a ten-year-old boy, Niko becomes a witness to his childhood, life in Sarajevo, school days in high school, his own first love... (From the foreword by Ana Kapor)

This is one of Kapor's most significant books: it tells of the pain and bitterness of loss. The Chronicle is, indeed, Kapor's testament book, in which he put, if not his "whole life", and that is his good piece.
