The novel How We Broke Our Legs (1997), a humorous and tender chronicle of family life through four decades of Croatian history, follows the fate of three generations of a Slavonian family from 1951 to 1992.
The most convincing part of this novel is certainly the one in Sarajevo, but also in other parts of the novel, Aleksandar Hemon connects interesting motives and observations in a breakneck fashion into a unique novel construction.
The novel is based on the writer's experiences in Shanghai during World War II and in the Civilian Collection Center in Lunghua, where he was interned from 1942 to 1945. Steven Spielberg made a film of the same name based on the script by Tom Stoppard.
